Indigo Blue Art presents Vocal 'Cords' on the Nib of My Pen, a collection of works on paper by internationally renowned master artist, Francis Newton Souza. Hailed as one of the trinity masters of Indian art alongside MF Husain and SH Raza, FN Souza is one of the most significant and sought after artists of the twentieth century whose contribution to modern Indian art have been likened to that of European masters Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and Georges Rouault. He was one of the rare artists who earned success and recognition internationally before interest and appreciation for his works gradually increased in his homeland.
A superb draughtsman of continuous and fluid lines devoid of interruption or correction, Souza produced a unique and stunning visual language which was often comparable in artistry to that of modern giants, Matisse and Picasso. In his chemical works, the artist invented a technique which involves using a chemical solution to alter the images on the surface of a magazine paper, before proceeding to layer the imageries and recreate the narrative. This exhibition – featuring remarkable drawings and chemical works of still life, landscape, figures and his famous heads, acquired through auctions – showcases his finesse with pen and ink as well as his unique chemical alterations.
