Chan Hampe Galleries is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Thai artist Knit Kounavudhi. Kounavudhi uses domesticated water buffalo leather as the main medium of his art works.
Natural leather was one of the first mediums for art. It was used for expression and utility much like early drawings and maps. The unique quality of leather offers a versatile range of applications in art and craft, its surface also aids in design and execution.
The quality of the genuine buffalo leather can accommodate mixed media execution such as painting, low relief forming, embossing, printing, color tanning, etc. The artist uses both old and new techniques in the execution of his work.
Kounavudhi's themes come from his experience painting in abstract expressionist and cubist styles. Being Thai of Chinese decent and educated in the west, his work often explores his Asian origin in addition to Buddhism and traditional Thai design.
