"Hold Me Tight" presents a compelling body of work by young Thai-Japanese artist Yuree Kensaku. This is her first solo exhibition in Singapore.
While informed by social issues, everyday imagery, and childhood memories, the collage works and prints in "Hold Me Tight" retain a surrealistic quality that seems both familiar and obscure at once.
Beneath her signature candy hues and pop images lies a world of uncertainty and insecurity that reflects the artist’s deeper desire for comfort and reassurance. Cartoonish in style, Yuree’s works are inhabited by fantastical creatures, scaled toys, life and death innuendos and, above all, the artist’s own reflection caught in the act of looking through the curtains of memory.
Yuree Kesanku was born in Bangkok in 1979 and obtained her BFA at the School of Fine Art at Bangkok University. Yuree’s artistic practice has revolved largely around paintings and mixed media installations, achieving a graphically strong and engaging language. She has participated in several group exhibitions including For Friends x Enemies (2012) at Gallery N, Bangkok, Beyond Superflat (2011) at Sakshi Gallery, Taipei, Taiwan, Kuando Biennale 2010 Memories and Beyond at Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts, Taipei, Taiwan and Animamix Biennale 2010 at MoCA Shanghai, China.
Her more recent solo shows are Shortcut to Melancholy Hill (2011) at 100 Tonson Gallery, Bangkok, Mapping Asia “Young Asian Artist Solo Shows” (2009) at the China World Trade Center, Beijing, China, Bubble Tea (2008) at Soka Art Center, Taipei and Tainan, Taiwan and The Adventure of Momotaro Girl (2007) at Yokohama Museum of Art, Japan. Her works are collected by several art museums, including the Singapore Art Museum, and private collectors.
