Your Night My Day
by Gallery em
Location: Gallery EM
Artist(s): Jin Han LEE
Date: 10 Sep - 24 Oct 2015

Gallery em is pleased to present a solo exhibition of works by Jin Han Lee titled Your Night My Day, from September 10 to October 24. This is the artist’s first solo exhibition with the gallery, and her second solo exhibition in Korea since her show at Alternative Space Loop in 2012.

Jin Han Lee has developed a distinctive body of paintings characterized by intense colors, free and loose brushstrokes, and the exploration of literal as well as symbolic significance of words. This exhibition features ten new paintings and a publication that traces the process behind these “still life” paintings of words.

Lee’s paintings, comprising random reinterpretation of metaphorical expressions refracted through private emotions, are a personalization, a possession, of words as “still lifes.” By bringing neologisms or metaphorical expressions found in literary passages into her canvases, Lee gives them a new, painterly expression. Her paintings combine a physical materiality resulting from the use of metallic pigments, thick impasto, and free-flowing brushstrokes with bodily forms that are exaggerated and abstracted. Thus the question of what to paint and how to paint converges, and in this process a hidden, interior meaning, situated between the random and the metaphorical, surfaces.

Jin Han Lee’s works begins with her search for metaphorical phrases and passages from novels and popular songs, and for newly-coined expressions in hipster culture, web-based communities, or the world of idol fandom. To these found materials, she adds her experience, thoughts, and feelings, giving expression to a dream-like reality in her paintings that harbor her various tendencies. Some of the ideal phenomena that the artist wishes to express can be seen in works like My Favourite Book (2015), showing a hand clasping a favorite book; Electric Shock (2012), titled after a K-Pop song; and Blanky Night (2014), which explores metaphorical expressions from a novel. In her dream-like paintings, the metaphorical images pause their movement and momentarily escape the continuous production of meaning. Just as a dreamer continues under the spell of a vivid, surreal dream from which she has awoken, the artist’s experience, thoughts, and feelings, activated through the process of artistic production, remain as traces in her paintings, continuing to engage with the audience long after their completion.

Jin Han Lee was born in 1982 and graduated from the Department of Painting at Hong-Ik University, Seoul. She holds an MFA from Goldsmiths College, London. Currently she is pursuing an MPhil/PhD in Fine Art at the Slade School, University College London. She has had solo shows at HADA Contemporary, London (2012) and Alternative Space Loop, Seoul (2012). She has also participated in such group exhibitions as Bloomberg New Contemporaries, London (2015); Saatchi Gallery New Sensations, London (2012); and In the Loop, Alternative Space Loop, Seoul (2012). In 2010, she was a finalist for the Guasch Coranty International Painting Prize, Barcelona. The present exhibition at Gallery em is realized in part through the support of the Emerging Artist exhibition program administered by the Seoul Museum of Art.
