Dong Woo Kim has taken over his teacher's traditional value using 'a rock' rather than terra-cotta or varnishing with lacquer. In this exhibition, 19 artworks based on major motif, a form and essence of man, such as motor and child, family or couple, will be displayed.
After studying under a master, Jin Kyu Kwon, the artist entered into Carrara, Italy, and worked. Carrara is a hometown of marble, which used by Michelangelo. Since late 1970s, many Korean young sculptors have moved to Carrara, and Dong Woo Kim was one of them.
During studying in Italy, he pursued contemporary way, but came back to studying for original form of man, as he learnt from the master.
As he said 'My interest is that expressing an essence of man as one of sculpture.', his work shows the most korean and traditional style using a marble. Physical properties, cold and heavy, of marble can be expressed as the artist's intention 'the essence a man has', this is a major resin to feel warm and peaceful from sculptures. Despite of his works made of rocks, these give a feeling of natural beauty and primitive atmosphere. Unlike other modes sculptors' works focusing on realistic description and technique, Kim's work done by consistent psychological research is the great achievement in his life.
