Hak-Chul SHIN biography | artworks | events

SHIN Hakchul, born in Gyeongsangbuk-do, in 1943, graduated from Hongik University, Korea. SHIN worked as a member of the avant-garde artists’ group ‘AG’ in the late 1960s and had his first solo exhibition in Seoul Museum in 1982, since when he has been preoccupied with realistic portrayals of the life of the South Korean grassroots and the truth of their history. During the country’s democratic struggles from the late 1970s to the 1990s, he became involved in the social reform movement, known as the minjung(grass roots) movement, painting their sorrows, joys, and hopes. In his early career, Shin approached to the basic realities of life through his shocking representations of the fetishism of mass consumption society which threatens the daily life of modern man but later, he turned his attention to more specific aspects of modern and contemporary Korean history, creating the series capturing and interpreting it with his own unique perspective and imagination, such as These series, which caused a great sensation in the Korean art circles both as his great masterpiece and representative works marked by sharp criticism, narrate the history of the sufferings of the Korean grass-roots who have undergone the apanese occupation of Korea, the independence movement against and the iberation from it, the tragedy of the fratricidal Korean war and the division of the Korean Peninsula, the political and social upheavals after the war, and the influx of foreign cultures. SHIN had many solo exhibitions including the one in Arco Art Center as well as various group exhibitions, and was formally arrested on a charge that his was in violation of the National Security Law. He was the recipient of 1st Art Reporters Award, 1st National Art Award, and 16th Kumho Art Award.
