Frank Kunert Solo Exhibition
by Leehyun Seoul Gallery
Location: Leehyun Seoul Gallery
Artist(s): Kunert FRANK
Date: 1 Jul - 31 Jul 2010

Kunert, who is all of these, has received many awards for his work in the US, but he is not recognized in the German building and construction industry. How could this be? It is as simple as this: he does not plan cities or streets, or landscapes, or gardens. He does not construct houses where one could live or work. He builds rooms in which one can move with thoughts, like playgrounds of fantasy.

Kunert literally builds houses for his ideas in small models. He gives three-dimensional form to thought and wordplay, and makes them understandable. Ideas are expanded and materialized.

Miniature scenes, created in slow motion, are becoming a technical curiousity. With ultimate care and sometimes astonishing accuracy, details are crafted and installed until everything is perfect and looks striking real. Then, after the model has become its own world, the photographer enters the game. Kunert intalls his camera, places his lights and makes a picture.

But Frank Kunert's pictures are not depictions of the real world in mock-ups of reality. They are just the opposite. He breaks with reality in a sensitive and enigmatic way. On close examination, one realizes that there is something wrong; the eye does not receive images that are expected from lifelong experience. Kunert thinks, plans, builds, botches and kneads in a beautiful way, contrary to our routine worlds of word and imagination. With his idealistic manipulations, he turns familiar perspectives and narrative correlations upside down and undermines reality. In principle, Kunert's artworks are like the nonsense poetry of Robert Gernhardt. Suddenly, they are more than just humourous, droll, grotesque, thoughtful or dreamy. Suddenly, they are provocative and critical, too."

Quote from Galerie Q in Leipzig, where some of Kunert's work is on exhibition (Kleine Welten / Small Worlds) until October 15th this year.
