DOOSAN Gallery Seoul is pleased to announce Jenny Cho’s solo exhibition, In Between: Story of Rob Lloyd.
An object is perceived as a different image according to one’s perspective when viewing it; thus, according to the viewer’s subjective interpretation, the image is stored within an individual, unique memory. Using this perspective as a tool, Jenny Cho examines the relationship between the visible and the invisible, and then paints the result of her inquiry.
In order to complete a painting that has an integrated perspective, Jenny Cho photographs an object from multiple angles and then utilizes those photographs recomposed within a single frame; she calls this process Photo Relief. Cho’s paintings, represented through Photo Relief, overcome painting’s intrinsic limitation of having only one perspective, and thus offer a clue to displaying an integrated awareness of visual perception.
In the core work of this exhibition, Five Variation, Cho brings Rob Lloyd, a young man who works at her father’s wood mill, into a leading role in the painting and represents, in turn, either a frame in which Rob’s perspective is converted into the viewer’s perspective or a moment in which the viewer’s perspective is spread out into three dimensional space.
Looking back on the history of painting, perspective has been used as a means of aesthetic expression, or with the purpose of showing the highest form of perception of the given era. But while panel paintings from the Middle Ages and Eastern scroll paintings are painted linearly—in other words, within a sequence of time and space—the stories in Five Variation take place in different times and spaces and are composed in five "anachronic" frames—frames lacking a specific sequence. Thus, Five Variation allows the viewer to appreciate the frames in multiple potential combinations, with each combination dependent on the viewer’s specific approach to the artwork.
This exhibition will provide an opportunity for viewers to consider how one’s awareness of the world, as displayed through art, can be recognized and expressed according to fundamental shifts in one’s own visual paradigm.
