"The Tolman Collection of Tokyo has expanded to become the Tolman Collection of Tokyo, New York, Singapore, and Shanghai. We are the largest publishers of contemporary Japanese graphic art with nearly 2,000 editions by dozens of artists to our credit. Prints from our gallery are distributed through various fine galleries and private dealers internationally. Our exclusive prints are renowned for being released in small editions and our involvement in distributing them is a total one.

Being ""on site"" in Japan means that we are conducting continuing personal contacts with our artists on a social level as well as maintaining a close business relationship with them. This insures a first viewing and privileged selection of their latest prints. For our customers, this means we can offer the best recent works, all in pristine condition -- this distinction sets us apart from other galleries. Another distinguishing factor is that we sell works made for our gallery by the artists and not pieces garnered at auction or the secondary market. This ensures ""condition"" and exclusivity of the art works for which we are widely known.

Our personal contribution to the Japanese print world has been the authorship of several books in English about this genre. Still available from any of our galleries are Karhu @ 77 (2004) and Collecting Modern Japanese Prints, Then and Now (1994), which talks about our personal history through the works of 100 artists. The book has 100 full-page color plates. These books are presently available only through our galleries. We have also produced several important catalogs for artists such as Toko Shinoda in order to commemorate our exhibition on her 90th birthday at the Hara Museum of Art (2003). Another publication, ""Toko Shinoda, A Lifetime of Continuing Accomplishment,"" (2005) was composed for a recent solo exhibition at the Shinsei Bank in Tokyo, attended by Her Majesty, the Empress.

We participate in many international art fairs to introduce Japanese prints around the world. In the last two years we have participated in large exhibitions in Beijing, Shanghai, Singapore, and even Dubai. Past ventures have taken us as far as Finland and Egypt. Our New York gallery, run by our daughter Allison Tolman, is a regular participant in art fairs throughout the United States. Upcoming events can be viewed on our “Exhibits” page which we update regularly.

With the rise of the internet as a venue for viewing and purchasing prints, we have been working hard on our website. This project was originally the responsibility of our beloved Taka Yamamoto, who passed away last year after being the mainstay of the gallery for 23 years. He is much missed and remains an intrinsic part of the Tolman Collection. The website design has been taken over by our newest employee, Tomoya Higashiura, who started in February 2008.
Gallery Manager, Eiji Nagao, and Norihiko Terashima, who works on special projects, are family as well as the heart and soul of our Tokyo operation, as those of you who visit the gallery regularly already know.

We hope that veteran collectors will feel free to contact us to re-establish old friendships and that new collectors will take the opportunity to satisfy their curiosity about the prints and the artists who make them.

Our 35 years as gallerists based in Tokyo and active throughout the world attest to our reputation as major purveyors of excellent Japanese contemporary prints on every level, a position enhanced by our physical presence in Japan. We hope those with questions will feel free to contact us.
