Artist's Statement Nevertheless, the book "Resistance" was not popular and did not sell well. It resulted mainly in dept. Still, it was my debut as a photographer. Totally exhausted after the publication of Resistance, I returned home to Kobe and took a break. I did however take pictures of the dockers at Kobe harbor, since I had been impressed by On the Waterfront (1954), a film by the American director Elia Kazan. Afterwards I was asked by an editor of the Zengakuren newspaper to once again take pictures of their student demonstrations. So I retuned to Tokyo in 1966. -an excerpt from "Barricade"
