Ando Collection
by ANDO Gallery
Location: ANDO Gallery
Artist(s): GROUP SHOW
Date: 14 Jan - 22 Mar 2014

ANDO GALLERY is pleased to announce "ANDO COLLECTION", a group exhibition of selected works by the gallery artists. Featured artists who have been attracting attention in Japan and overseas are Ricarda Roggan, Aoi Sasai, Seiya Shinotsuka and Shonah Trescott.

RICARDA ROGGAN
Born in Dresden, Germany in 1972, Roggan studied photography at and received a master's degree from Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig in 2004. She also studied at the Royal College of Art in London in 2003. In the exhibition "Zwischen Wirklichkeit und Bild: Positionen deutscher Fotografie der Gegenwart" at The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo in 2005, Roggan received attentions as the youngest artist. In her solo show at ANDO GALLERY in 2011, the works from the series "Ausgänge", "RESET" and "Sedimente" were exhibited.

SASAI Aoi
Born in Kanagawa in 1986, Sasai graduated from the Graduate School of Art and Design, Musashino Art University, with a Master's degree in Painting. She oil-paints humorously-shaped trees blowing in the wind against a grey background suggesting of disquiet. In 2013, Sasai participated in VOCA 2013 in March, and in her second exhibition at ANDO GALLERY in June, Sasai presented new paintings which give the impression of new development by featuring trees, her familiar motif. As an emerging artist, Sasai's further steps are expected.

SHINOTSUKA Seiya
Born in Kumamoto in 1970, Shinotsuka graduated from the Department of Japanese Painting, Tama Art University in 1996. In the group exhibition "MOT Annual 2006: No Border" at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo in 2006, Shinotsuka showed abstractly depicted landscapes drawn on paper using oil pastels. The images appearing in the works are the artist's "inner landscape" rooted in his own memories and experiences, which implies Shinotsuka's main theme "the circulation of the atmosphere": one of the universal phenomena. After residing in Germany for one year, Shinotsuka showed new works in his solo exhibition at ANDO GALLERY in 2013. In the autumn of 2014, a solo exhibition is scheduled at the Tsunagi Art Museum in Kumamoto.

SHONAH TRESCOTT
Born in Australia in 1982, Trescott graduated from the National Art School, Sydney in 2004. She paints with oil, using themes drawn from the history of Western European art and motifs such as landscapes and still-life which she observes directly. In her second solo show "Drawn into the Light" at ANDO GALLERY in 2012, the artist presented paintings, photographs and silkscreen prints derived from the artist's living experience in the Arctic where she visited as an artist-in-residence. She now lives and works in Puerto Rico.
