The Hilltop of Mandarin Fields - A Commonplace Tale
by Metaphysical Art Gallery
Location: Metaphysical Art Gallery
Artist(s): Shintaro MIYAKE
Date: 21 Apr - 20 May 2012

Japanese neopop artist Shintaro Miyake, in this April will bring his “Hilltop of Mandarin Fields” to the first solo exhibition in Taipei. In the Mandarin Fields there is all and none, happy, absurd and surreal just like an unorthodox arcadia far away from the mortal world and full of infinite possibilities.

In today’s world the most spotlighted Japanese might be regarded as Takashi Murakami, Yoshitomo Nara, and Yayoi Kusama. While Takashi Murakami features smiling followers, the evil-naïve big eyes are Yoshitomo Nara’s instinctive association. And Kusama Yayoi’s dots spreading into nets shows us the nervousness and mysophobia-like monomania in the native blood. Similarly, when mentioning Shintaro Miyake we unconsciously smile and think of Sweet-san’s flat and big face, thin and long limbs, rounded pointing ears, and super cut smiling face.

Combining live performance, video, painting, sculpture, and all for of art expression, the characteristic of Shintaro Miyake’s artworks is in fact the simple and clear central conception, the delicate skill and the perfect colorful drama play. Sweet-san has been always Mr. Miyake’s best heroine who often trades outfits at each appearance accompanied with the awkward Minotaur or stormtrooper. She likes to lie on the beach, ride the killer whale, climb mountains, cosplay as asamurai or Kabuki, playing around the world innocently with energetic interests. Shintaro Miyake himself also very often costumes himself as the characters in his painting to interact with audiences, however at the same time keep a certain distance. Fluffy is a figure of cloud sustained by balloons with a huge head and long drooping ears like bunny, and besides there are the beaver, giant octopus, the alien, Godzilla. In 2006 at Boston Mr. Miyake, put on his huge puffy suite handmade by himself, drawing on a wall of 30 feet height; In his solo exhibition at Art Basel fair 2008 as he dressed up as a giant octopus performing the tea ceremony at the exhibition space. At first glance, Mr. Miyake seems to be a day dream of recreational fantasy, however in fact goes further beyond the the surface cuteness and purity. His images always magnificently narrate the thinkings torward the history and the society, moverover the insights of philosophy of life.

In “The Hilltops of Mandarin Fields” exhibition, Mr. Miyake specially creates new characters and dramas to Taipei audiences. Besides Peanut man, Long-hair girl, Avocado tree, Clam-head and Skull, there is the Ordinary with a long nose. They are cute, awkward, somewhat evil, innocent, discrepant, and brave; interesting facial expressions and body gestures carry incredible geniality which seems to bring the artist front of you, vividly gesturing those imaginations real but difficult to outline.

In everyone’s heart there is a desired mandarin field full of romantic tales. With limitless symbols, Shintaro Miyake in his happy but awkward mandarin fields encounters unexpected roses. The season of mandarin comes. On 21st, April, Shintaro Miyake will present himself to meet roses, meet you in “The Hilltops of Mandarin Field”. Stay tuned...
