This March, Aki gallery is honor to invite Ai Yamaguchi, Marefumi Komura, Nobuaki Onishi, Youhei Sugita to exhibit together in our upcoming exhibition ”Crossover”. In 2013, they set a sensitive tone and create a romantic poetics which cross over the boundary of materials and times, then they present their works precisely from a soft perspective and neat style.
Ai Yamaguchi
One of the extraordinary Japanese contemporary artists” Ai Yamaguchi” who collaborated with well-known cosmetics brand “Shu Uemura” got great attentions and reached highly sales results in international exhibition and auction. Also, “Kumogakure-Solo Exhibition by Ai Yamaguchi” was the most popular and successful show at Aki gallery two years ago. The firm and hard canvas of her works cover a soft stuffing ”cotton”, just like the Edo-period girls who have strong and tough appearance outside, but also with the gentle and mild mind inside. In her new series, these girls change to classic and elegant nobles, and cross the line between the outer characteristics and inner mind of Edo-period girls.
Nobuaki Onishi
Nobuaki Onishi uses his surrealistic techniques and extremely poetic perspectives to frozen the timeline of these old and rotten items, then these objects overcome the control of time, and the evidence of their existence is stopped in the air. The ordinary items we used to see in our daily life such as light bulb or wine glasses are all given an unique transparent outline, and its poetic technique overtake the mobility of objects and represent the reality and false, and shift between both of them.
Marefumi Komura
Komurab’s expressed his deep and suffered emotion after a series of disaster such as 311 and Fukushima nuclear through his works. The aesthetics from the trauma makes the landscape and facial expression of people in this works is partly wiped out, and the fragility and instability are kept playing. Komurab combines this emotional expression with the western style painting skill, and stand the crossing point to view the inner affection.
Youhei Sugita
Sugita’s works always cheer people up! The thick oil material is dramatically layered on the canvas, and Sugita collages his own memories and experiences, and let them be part of the concept of his works. It appears a special veiled atmosphere of out of focus.
