Young artist Chou Chu Wang is known for his use of pointillist technique to create realistic oil paintings from his meticulous memory. Winner of the 2007 Taipei Arts Award, Chou’s series of paintings entitled Naughty shot this brilliant young art star to fame. In his Naughty series, which is included in this exhibition, Chou presents stark contrasts between a children's angelic features and wicked nature by depicting their love of mischief. Chou's style in these paintings can be compared to a black and white comic strip version of Aesop's Fables, or even an artist's picture book of children's mischievous expressions. Unlike the naughty yet innocent child hidden in each of our hearts, twenty-first century children act cool, cheeky, duplicitous, grumpy or destructive, as well as bully others, use foul language or lack upbringing. Chou presents a spectrum of children’s cuteness, purity and devilish nature. With paintings, three-dimensional imagery, animation and installation art, the exhibition I am a Naughty Boy further develops themes in the Naughty series, depicting children's humorous and irreverent actions to explore the inner workings of youth.
