Beyond ‘The End’
by Shine Art Space
Location: SHiNE ART SPACE
Artist(s): CHEN Wei Wei
Date: 2 Jun - 2 Jul 2009

SHiNE Art Space is pleased to announce Beyond ‘The End’ – Chen Weiwei Solo Exhibition. The first solo exhibition by Chen Weiwei, the youngest artist SHiNE Art Space has ever exhibited since our inauguration.

Beyond ‘The End’ showcases Chen Weiwei’s works from her post-graduate period (2006) to the present day (2009). For her first solo exhibition, SHiNE Art Space wishes to show the audience a full spectrum of the artist’s progress in the last 3 to 4 years.

At first glance, Chen Weiwei’s works may seem narrative with female figures and clowns standing in glamorous settings with beams of lights shining on them. However, it is only with a little pondering that one would see the world she tries to create for us – the reality after fairy tales ends. Her use of colours suggests the childish innocence we’ve all once experienced, however, with those injured characters she portrays in her works, the artist puts forward her views on that not all happy endings are as simple as they may seem.

In her statement, Chen Weiwei wrote: “Through my works, I wish to convey what I have learnt as a child growing up under the influences of good values and virtues from fairy tales. We have all been told when we were younger, that good always defeats evil and the world would be a better place if we all possessed those celebrated virtues such as honesty, bravery, and loyalty like the heroes and heroines. However, it is not until at a certain age that we realize the world is somewhat unlike what the fairy tales had taught us. Behind those beautiful portrayals of life, there is always another side to the story; a crude side that teaches us, sometimes, our values of right and wrong are simply not nearly enough to judge the world we are in.”
