Landscape of Memory
by Daegu Art Museum
Location: Daegu Art Museum
Artist(s): GROUP SHOW
Date: 27 May - 31 Aug 2014

Landscape of Memory by Daegu Art Museum is a project exhibition mounted to shed light on the art-historical value of contemporary Daegu art and the regionality and identity of Daegu in the flow of global art. The exhibition has also been arranged to consider how fine arts, particularly Western art styles, were brought into the country during the period of Japanese colonial rule and the Korean War and how the new mode of expression and aesthetic consciousness has changed our culture and life since the 1950s. The exhibition provides time to look back on the true spirit of the artists who consistently worked with a sense of existential self, going through turbulent periods.

An attempt was once made to subordinate local culture and art to the administrative capital Seoul, by certain people measuring it as 'region' or 'remote area'. This attempt encountered considerable resistance as it tended to cause a 'polarization of culture' – a dichotomous division of the identity of local indigenous culture. People at the time committed the error of judging the intrinsic local culture and art as vulgar culture and below standard through arbitrary an interpretation of themes addressed in local culture and art. Local culture and art should be judged from the perspective of autonomy and independence to maintain its objectivity.

These issues are certainly worth reviewing in the new environment of the 'era of localization' in the 21stcentury. And, a shift in thinking on local culture and art away from a distorted, prejudiced perspective is also required. Contemporary art varying in styles and expression methods has undergone change amid rapidly shifting flows of politics and economy. The distinction of genres therein has broken down as rapidly as changes in the world. This exhibition is of considerable significance in that through it we can examine the past and present of contemporary Daegu art in the same vein as contemporary Korean art amid swift changes and streams in the international art scene.

Landscape of Memory consists of works by seven mid-career and senior artists, LEE Youngryung, CHUNG Unki, JUNG Chihwan, CHA Keanam, CHOY Haklo, HUR Yong, and HONG Hyonki who have consistently worked in the category of regionality and temporality since the 1960s. The exhibition is intended to cast new light on their indigenous messages and infinite creativity through works categorized by period since the 1960s. Through works by the invited artists, the exhibition serves as momentum to contemplate what their constant artistic spirits have meant amid times of rapid change.
