Confession - Jinah Son solo exhibition
by Force Gallery
Location: Force Gallery
Artist(s): Jinah SON
Date: 14 May - 3 Jun 2013

Dots, flowers, mosaic and other signs that populate the backgrounds of Son’s images are crucial elements in deciphering her work. They correspond to the persistent self-questioning that assumes different forms during contextual shifts----what kind of relationship does the chair have with the world, given that it is a projection of individual will? This is not only a contemplation directed inwards, but also a search that opens itself up. We can discern a slow yet resolute perceptual trajectory through the changes in her painting----as the background signs grow in strength, the centrality of the chair characteristic of her early production withdraws and becomes diminished. For Sun, this is a process of self-purging. As time passes and things get altered beyond recognition, emotions of an individual grow meager and negligible when compared to the vicissitudes of life. Thus the repetitive generation and inundation of background signs is comparable to the cultivation of a meditative immersion that frees one from discursive thought.

In Son’s more recent productions, the chair that symbolized the self is taken out of the painting and transposed into installation. This is also a reversal of consciousness for the artist---from the internal dissection of her psyche to the ecstatic perspective she uses to views herself through the eyes of the other. As the status of the background drifts from the margins toward the center, the artist too becomes more composed when facing her inner world. Furthermore, in her recent installations, the background signs from her painting are transformed into stainless steel objects that amalgamate into massive clusters. Hanging from the ceiling, the clusters cast a cumbersome shadow over the chair on the floor. This can also be seen as the recognition of the power of reality to trump the individual. Yet, the recognition and confrontation with this fact reflects that her inner being is approaching maturity and resilience.
