Leeahn Gallery Seoul is delightful to present the solo exhibition 'miscellaneous' of Hyun Wook Ryu. This is his second solo exhibition after 'One Cut' in 2008, and 16 new paintings and drawings expressing memory, time and existence will be on display.
A mixture of forms by acrylic and oil paint with airbrush and spray drawing in-between, his painting consists of multilayered images, piled narratives, and conflicts and variation of various materials and methods. Ryu's art work, which coexists old memory and impromptu emotion, imagination and intended choice, drawing and erasing, surface and space, extension and extinction of meaning, looks like a disordered long film with long narrative on a scene. Memory and case with a mix of past, present and future or recomposition create a fabricated center on the scene and the boring white space between images encourages such chaos and reveals a trace of working hands. A realistic drawing by brush or extempore one by spray and airbrush form different layers of recreation and expression and make more complicated structure and meaning.
His painting talks about subjective sense and thought, spontaneousness and gaze and list and layer, which looks like a movie, novel or a memory going against the time. Personal time, hurt and sorrow become a new plot and the individual narrative functions as a voluntary storyteller. And the audience face with narrative in the scene closely to understand complicated images.
The artist shares compulsive memory and impression of images and objects and tries to expand and reproduce a meaning variously through it.
