Character Study: Nation
by Arrow Factory
Location: Arrow Factory
Artist(s): JIAO Yingqi
Date: 6 Jul - 8 Sep 2013

Arrow Factory is pleased to present Character Study: Nation, an interactive project by artist Jiao Yingqi that explores alternative forms and meanings for commonly used Chinese characters. Character Study is a project that began in 1994, and has taken various incarnations and exhibited in different exhibitions including at the Iberia Center for the Arts (2010) and Shenzhen’s OCAT (2011). In this version of the project, Jiao focuses on the character for Nation and asks visitors to participate by inventing new variations of the character based on different combinations of the individual components. Entering a hybrid classroom / voting booth, with educational and reference materials hanging from the walls, viewer participants can handwrite their own characters on printed forms and submit into a ballot box for later publication. To facilitate participation Arrow Factory will open its doors on Saturdays and Sundays from 2-7pm during the run of the exhibition. Additional submission boxes will be placed in a few businesses in and around Jianchang Hutong. Contributions to the project will be collected into a book and published.

Jiao will lead two Character Study workshops on July 13 and Sept 7, 2013 from 4-5:30pm. The workshops will cover methods for using Chinese to create new characters.

About the artist: Beijing-based Jiao Yingqi (b. 1958) is conceptual artist and a researcher at the China Art Research Institute. He is a graduate of the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) and was a lecturer in CAFA’s Mural Painting department until 1997. Between 1997-2001 he founded and ran the Beijing Artists Warehouse (北京艺术家仓库), one of the earliest artist-run spaces in Beijing. His practice has evolved from traditional painting and mixed media through computer-based hypertext to his current research into new Chinese characters. His work has been shown in various international venues including the Portugal Madaila Contemporary Art Museum (1995), the Madrid University City Museum of Modern Art (1994) and at the Sao Paulo Biennial (1996).
