Rhetoric
by Art Channel
Location: Art Channel
Artist(s): JIN Feng
Date: 4 Mar - 17 Apr 2011

Jin Feng is a unique case in contemporary art circles. One of the most interesting things is: his wisdom is conveyed by employing the most stupid method to comprehend the simplest thing, namely, regarding the inappreciable thing as the treasure has been his habit and methodology. At Jin Feng’ s solo exhibition in Shanghai, I present him four words: Ju Zhong Ruo Qing! (His large capacity could take everything as a piece of cake.) Actually this truth he understands deeper than all of us, but he never easily gave up without getting to the bottom of the problems. However Jin Feng’s new paintings have showed a beginning of passing through the dead end.

In fact, Jin Feng has done an extensive reading as an intellectual background, which belongs to the rare one among the current artists nowadays. Jin Feng’s early paintings were described as “wildness” commitment in a way of dissipating without inhibition. His exploration and sensitiveness on the material and artistic language had achieved a super level which was extremely difficult to be reached in early 1990s’ China. Although these advantages had been denied and washed out by him in early time, they are still of the quality as nutrition for his artistic creation. Therefore Jin Feng’s exploration and comprehensive experiment in his early time is a very important period in his art.

Afterwards Jin Feng gave up paintings and changed to experiments in various disciplines: performance, installations and videos. His unique way of interpreting his attention to social problems has become his creative attitude and methodology in recent years. Additionally Jin Feng has obtained a remarkable achievement in this respect.

Jin Feng continues his exploration in his new paintings by integrating the painting material and technique, which he had not touched for a long time, into the conceptual practice with social problems and refines them. So Jin Feng becomes more open which is the most gratifying. It is as well as meaningful to use “Rhetoric” as the topic of this exhibition, because among Jin Feng’s paintings there are strikingly divergent interpretations and treatments for the similar issue on political and cultural aspects in different regions and countries. Melting those characteristics and differences into the paintings becomes the unique charm of Jin Feng’s new works. In view of painting ontology, Jin Feng’s paintings might need a certain interpretation, resulting in lack of trifling simplicity, for this reason, the rhetoric becomes a very important way to demonstrate his art. These paintings come to be a carrier of Jin Feng’s artistic conception, while the exploration and practice of painting ontology is in question. Therefore I think it may be a new misinterpretation in Jin Feng’s paintings, nevertheless hereinto some new possibilities can be discovered.
