Chen Guangwu has been described as an abstract painter yet he speaks of himself as a pure calligrapher with no adherence to an abstract aesthetic. He works with traditional conventions - writing words and characters on rice paper every day, with the aim of perfecting his hand.
In Chen Guangwu´s calligraphy, tradition and modernity are in equal partnership. Here, tradition is perhaps more accurately used as an adjective, aligned with the use of traditional materials like the ink, paper, and the brush, though his process bears little relation to any from the past.
