The word "landscape" originates in the Dutch word "landschap" in the 16th century. In China, the landscape painting tradition has a much longer tradition. It has evolved since the Tang dynasty (7th to 9th c.) alongside “mountain water” poetry, which celebrates the delight of exploring nature for the poetic soul.
This exhibition features a variety of contemporary approaches to interpreting “mountain water”, created by veteran artists from Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Mainland China. Their media include ink, oil, lacquer, relief sculpture and video; what they share is the lyrical and evocative realm that is an essential element of Chinese culture.
