Chinese Painting: Zhang Xiaogang, Fang Lijun, Feng Mengbo
by Hanart TZ Gallery
Location: Galerie Rudolfinum
Date: 25 Sep - 28 Dec 2008

The current exhibition Chinese Painting: Zhang Xiaogang, Fang Lijun, Feng Mengbo at Galerie Rudolfinum will continue until 28 December 2008.  Grab the last chance to see this triple exhibition of the three leading Chinese vanguard artists, Zhang Xiaogang, Fang Lijun and Feng Mengbo, of whom primarily Zhang Xiaogang stands at the absolute peak not only in China but also within the Euro-American art world. Whilst all three ensue from a heritage of European painting tradition, their work is clearly shaped by Chinese reality and sensitivity. For example, the painting of Zhang Xiaogang examines the notion of identity in the Chinese culture of collectivism. It is inspired by a family photograph from the time of The Cultural Revolution as well as the European tradition such as surrealism.

On the other hand, Zhang brought the concept of memory, a moment caught in the flow of time in its newest form, to the empty landscape and interiors through which the past flowed and remained but a nostalgic memory.

"...... We naturally moved on to Milan Kundera and his Unbearable Lightness of Being. A similar ideological base, face to face with similar blunders and pitfalls, nevertheless we experience different cultural situations. Over the decades we have been seeking in external and internal words some category or type which would be appropriate for our imitation. And during the course of this "imitation" we slowly and carefully approach our own reality, a remote, untouchable tradition and sensitive self, which persistently pulsates. And as time flies by and everything changes with time, the people and books which once inspired us today become our genuinely most internal friends. I shall soon leave for Prague, town of Kafka and Milan Kundera, who for us represented a light in the darkness. Streets previously full of romanticism and warped by blood shall soon emerge from the realm of film and books and again become another European city. At home I selected Kundera's recent novel Identity from my new book acquisitions, and with the following passage have honoured the memory of times long past, times full of hope."
