AJC is proud to present Somewhere, Here, a solo exhibition of new oil paintings by UK, London-based artist, Gill Rocca.
This captivating series of landscape paintings, all oils, vary in scale from exquisite miniatures painted on wood to large scale work on canvas. Inspired by the realism of film and photography, these anonymous, always uninhabited, scenes create a dreamlike tension between the reality of the landscape and the imagination. The roads are often shrouded in mist, or captured as night draws in and are lit by the glow of street lights or distant headlights, the only hint of a human presence.
Rocca’s palette is subdued with carefully chosen hues of grey, blue, brown and green, subtly applied and so perfectly blended that one must look closely to spot the trace of a brush. Each piece evokes a sense of memory and reveals the burden of the day or night, provoking the viewer to pause to consider what is familiar, what has happened here and ponder what might happen next.
