Looked for inspiration from Chinese literature, Yang Hui tries to portray the idea of peach as the source of joy and the dreamland of happiness throughout her series of works. From the ancient Chinese fable “the Peach Blossom Spring Story” to the modern stage play “Secret Love for the Peach Blossom Spring”, the “Garden of Peach” symbolizes the metaphor of utopias. It represents harmony between humankind and nature as well as an ideal state of spiritual happiness and fulfillment – Such are the ultimate spiritual pursuit of most ancient Chinese literati. While the use of red and gold represents the mood of joy and happiness in accordance with Chinese tradition, the figures are avoiding it by covering their eyes and ears. Such contrast coincides with the philosophical thoughts “Does utopia really exist? Can human reach utopia just by preventing ourselves from seeing and hearing realities?”
