Galerie du Monde at Art Basel Hong Kong 2013
by Galerie Du Monde
Location: Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre
Artist(s): QIN Chong, LAM Tungpang
Date: 23 May - 26 May 2013

Galerie du Monde presents the newly created installation work One-Two-World by the young talented Hong Kong artist Lam Tung-pang at DISCOVERIES, ART BASEL HK 2013. Accordingly to Lam, video is not about moving images but about an object, which physically means something in the materialistic world. He feels that things are being constructed and deconstructed at the same time, as is his mind and society. The sources and materials that he employs in the installation, including the scale models, plants, drawing and projection on paper are all harmoniously set and placed. Our perspective on nature is a fundamental facet of our own culture. A sustainable and culturally significant path to development requires us to understand nature from our own cultural viewpoint. The work reflects the response of the artist towards the unavoidable changes of society, the world and also his changing perspectives on the world, and though tragedy sometimes may occur, consequently, his work will continue to evolve.

The artist is currently living and working in Hong Kong and is today considered as one of the top young artists in Hong Kong. Tung-pang is known for using both traditional (oil, acrylic, charcoal, pencil) and non-traditional (nails, sand, plywood) materials to produce thought-provoking pieces to engage with the ideas of memory, history or reflecting the specific situation of individuals or groups. They are mostly related to specific situations or social content and some of them are in monumental scale. All of Lam’s works are given a touch of humanity that makes them more approachable.

Lam studied Fine Art at The Chinese University of Hong Kong before undertaking an MA at Central St Martins College of Art, London in 2004. He has been awarded numerous scholarships and awards, including the Arts Scholarship from Hong Kong Arts Development Council (2003), “Hunting Art Prize Young Artist of the Year” in U.K. (2005) and the Hong Kong Contemporary Art Biennial Award (2009). He has exhibited extensively world-wide and has works in many private and public collections, including Deutsche Bank, the Hong Kong Museum of Art and works commissioned by the Hong Kong Legislative Council.

ENCOUNTERS 13 at Art Basel Hong Kong 2013:

Following the successful parallel solo exhibition “Interplay“ at the gallery and the “Past-Future” installation project at ARTHK12 by the internationally acclaimed Chinese conceptual artist, Qin Chong, Galerie du Monde presents another magnificent large-scale installation project “Losing” by the artist at Encounters 13.

Born in Xinjiang, China, Qin Chong is currently living in Berlin and Beijing. He was highlighted by KUART to be the year 2012’s most exploratory artist and selected as one of the artists of the year 2012 in China. Qin’s sensitivity towards the use of medium is far beyond imagination. He has employed a wide range of mediums including installation, ink painting and performance in his original works of art.

Qin Chong’s large-scale installation “Past-Future” featured at ARTHK12 has left the audience with a deep impression and a profound impact. For the upcoming Art Basel Hong Kong 2013, the installation project "Losing" to be presented at Encounters 13 is comprised of twenty-two paper rolls, each of them 6 meters high and 1.2 meters wide that are painted with soot instead of ink. The traces of smoke, which were generated in the process of burning, leave beautiful and subtle signs on each paper roll, providing the paper with its own texture and through this texture makes visible our thoughts, fears and hopes. The dual nature of fire brings brightness of humanity as well as darkness through its destructive force.

His philosophy of destruction and rebirth has again been reinterpreted and continues to evolve. The traditional medium of ink and paper has gone through a stimulating creative process and provides a new direction of thinking. The essence of Oriental aesthetics has been significantly re-expressed on the visual plane to the audience.
