Maywa Denki Design Store
by I/O (Input/Output)
Location: I/O (Input/Output)
Artist(s): Maywa DENKI
Date: 12 Mar - 29 Apr 2011

When there is a fine line between an ideal goal and dream, how many of us can still insist on our goals? Maybe that is why Maywa Denki always deeply touches our hearts. The original Maywa Denki Ltd. selling electronics was founded by Mr. Tosa in 1961 then winded up in 1979 due to the energy crisis. Later in 1993 the two sons of Mr. Tosa, Masamichi and Nobumichi Tosa restored Maywa Denki in a different way; combining art and commercial products together, the revived Maywa Denki continues the hard work of their father and at the same time fulfills their dreams in art. Their motto Why not to break the limit? is the reason of their various creative productions.

Maywa Denki insists that they are a company instead of an art group, developing their own characteristics in the field. All their creative artworks are called “products” and their performances serves as a “product demonstration” for their ingenious creations. The products are designed according to theories in physics and mechanism; their style is innocent, absurd and funny. In 2006 their NAKI Series made an impact on the art & design community with its fish inspired products. Each performance by Maywa Denki is unique; all members will wear a blue uniform imitating the original company’s factory-like style. They focused on research and development and now presenting the newest electronic music instrument series OTAMATONE; the cute tadpole looking gadget is actually an instrument to be played by moving your hands up and down and also by controlling its mouth. The series includes various sizes and even recently launched is an iphone application of the series. Each product carries the dream of the Tosa brothers that makes one smile and reminds us the importance of having our own dream.

In this two months I/O will transform into Maywa Denki Store to showcase their brilliant works. From the well-known NAKI, Knockman and Beatman series, the OTAMATONE series and OTAMATONE Jumbo which President Tosa will use to play in the concert will also be in our gallery! These “products” is considered to have healing effects in Japan and by selling these items; the public is exposed to their artworks, bringing joy to the community. In this busy city, let I/O bring comfort and joy to you, wishing all a happier life.

Opening Reception: 12th March 2011, 6pm-8pm
