The READ showcase
by I/O (Input/Output)
Location: I/O (Input/Output)
Artist(s): SHENG Bo Cheng
Date: 25 Sep - 21 Nov 2010

I/O proudly presents the emerging Taiwan artist Sheng Bo Cheng’s READ showcase, an installation series showcasing the concept of a unique way of translation.

Sheng is inspired and enlightened by the concept of AURA in the book of Kleine Geschichte der Photographie (1931) by Walter Benjamin, and a series of installation in various scales are made to complete the story of AURA. Each of the installation consisted of two important translation procedures: from Text (book content/ poems) to Braille, from Braille to the Holes on the Music cards (note for the windup music boxes). Through the translation, it creates a powerful transformation for the work; the sound created extends beyond the confines of written words into a series of narrative Braille notes infused with rich overtones. The work transformed sense of sight into Braille (touch) and then further into the tunes played by a music box (sound). This series offers layers of reading to trigger a series of sensory switches which imbue it with infinite creative possibilities.
