I/O Relocation Opening Exhibition
by I/O (Input/Output)
Location: I/O (Input/Output)
Artist(s): Teddy LO, Ellen PAU, Samson YOUNG, Troika
Date: 28 May - 6 Aug 2011

Input/Output (I/O) gallery was established in 2009 with a mission to introduce top new media artworks to the public. In 2010, an off-site consultancy sector was set up, bringing new media arts into private sectors through various forms of participation, in government and art institution projects. To kick start 2011, I/O brought in Japanese art performance group, Maywa Denki! Transforming the gallery space into a design store and also inviting them to perform at the Kowloonbay International Trade and Exhibition Centre. The unforgettable performance was a fun blend of art and upbeat music, so much so that the audience of all ages stepped out of their seats to dance on the spot!

With plans to expand, Input/Output is excited to announce its relocation to 28 Tai Ping Shan Street, Sheung Wan. The new space is almost TRIPLE the size of the last which allows greater curatorial freedom. The grand opening will commence at 6:30pm on 28th May 2011, with a TWO month exhibition showcasing interactive installation artworks by local and international elite artists. Local artists, Teddy Lo, Ellen Pau, Samson Young and leading UK artist, Troika are amongst the few artists you will see!

LED artist Teddy Lo has exhibited to much acclaim in the US, Europe, and Asia. Recognized in international art circles as a pioneering figure in the “Tech-Art” scene, Lo’s best-known works present a fusion of technological and aesthetic elements – a “unique kingdom of light and shadow”, as one critic describes. In 2003, Lo held his first solo art exhibition, Morphology, in NYC. “Black or White” is a real-time interactive data visualization sculpture using light emitting diode and fiber optics to express stocks data from Hang Seng Index and the New York Stock Exchange.

Started as a self-taught video artist, Ellen Pau takes many roles in the Hong Kong art scene –an independent filmmaker/ cinematographer, art curator/ administrator, art critic and MTV director. A full-time radiographer by profession, Pau co-founded the media art group Videotage and Microwave International New Media Art Festival. “Recycling Cinema” is a video that addresses the notion of observation and participation, reality and representation.

Samson Young is one of Hong Kong’s most sought-after composers today. With formal training in music composition, an eye for visuals and a keen interest in emergent technologies, Young has been known to combine his diverse expertise into uniquely intermedia experiences. His works are fundamentally informed by an engagement with new cultural-technological paradigms, yet deeply grounded in the classical musical tradition. Machines for Making Nothing is a series of tiny electronic objects that comment on the banality of human-machine interaction

To mark the grand opening, the gallery will also feature Troika’s collaboration with luxury brand Swarovski –“Falling Light”, a spellbinding installation of crystals and LED lights. Troika is Eva Rucki, Conny Freyer and Sebastien Noel, who met while studying at the Royal College of Art, and subsequently started their London-based studio in 2003. Troika is widely known for its experiential artworks and its practice is positioned at the junction where art, architecture, and technical inventions intersect. Notable in their formal simplicity and sense of humour, Troika's installations and sculptures engage the viewer in an often playful, sometimes contemplative manner.

This is an exciting time for Input/Output as we will also be participating in ART HK 11, the most anticipated event of the year in the local art scene. Expect to see exciting new media artworks at Input/Output’s booth (1C12).
