An Encounter of Sadness
by Anna Ning Fine Art
Location: Anna Ning Fine Art
Artist(s): AI Xuan, HE Duo Ling
Date: 26 Sep - 10 Oct 2013

Anna Ning Fine Art presents a first-ever exhibition of two renowned artists from China – Ai Xuan and He Duoling. The exhibition entitled “An Encounter of Sadness” will showcase various “Scar Art” paintings of the two artists allowing you to explore and experience a journey of melancholy and nostalgia.

Ai Xuan and He Duoling are leading artists of China’s "Scar Art" movement. "Scar Art" is an ideological movement after the Cultural Revolution advocating a “respect of history”. These artworks feature people in solitude with a desolate background depicting melancholy and forlornness.

Both Ai Xuan and He Duoling adopt the people of Yi and people from Tibet to reflect their inner feelings and perception of life. There are a lot of similarities between these two artists, such as the composition, the way of expression, the realistic portrayals of their subjects, the simplicity of the background as well as the synesthetic atmospheric layout.

Tibetans in solitude is always the subject matter in Ai Xuan’s paintings communicating his bleak feelings toward loneliness and wilderness. Ai Xuan’s paintings depict his life in Tibet where he lived in 1973 in search of inspirations for his creation. His paintings characteristically feature a Tibetan girl in which you can find all his iconic signs, from the texture of her padded jacket, her melancholic eyes, the desolate background, the simple composition to the progressive exposure of her utmost feelings. Ai Xuan’s paintings “The Wilderness” and “Wolf Valley” will be featured in this joint exhibition.

He Duoling’s paintings feature realistic subject matters with imaginary background, light and animals. He Duoling’s creative style varies through different periods in his life. His graduation artwork “Spring Wind Has Been Awakened” is his signature painting of the "Scar Art" movement. This painting features a rural girl sitting on the grass while her puppy gazing up the sky with a buffalo and meadow as the background projecting the vitality and vigor of spring.. This exhibition will feature He Duoling’s paintings “Woman and White Horse” and “A Boy in Winter” which express similar feelings as his “Spring Wind Has Been Awakened”.
