Luo Qing: No One Gets Out Alive
by Klein Sun Gallery
Location: Eli Klain Fine Art
Date: 5 Mar - 20 Apr 2009

Eli Klein Fine Art is proud to present “No One Gets Out Alive”, a solo exhibition of the recent works of Chinese contemporary artist, Luo Qing.

In stark contrast to his earlier, more realistic work, Luo Qing has shifted to a style that combines impressionism and surrealism. In his newly created oils on canvas, he illustrates the emotional relationship that exists internally between man and his external environment. Through these cold and desolate depictions, he voices his distrust and misgivings in the world in which he finds himself struggling to exist.

Throughout the exhibition, the viewer is able to understand the deeper psychology of the artist. By employing a coarse and unrefined style, Luo Qing distinctly communicates his contempt for the frameworks and guidelines of greater society. The subject matter also conveys his innermost thoughts.  His placement of figures running or hiding in dark wooded areas presents a visual metaphor for his defiance of the commercial institutions, political climates, and traditions that make up the reality in which we live.

Although the central theme within these paintings is one of despair, Luo Qing continues to work through his art to find a way towards hope. Despite his personal belief that an individual is generally unable to stand against the grim realities of life, he feels that he is most able to do so through his artwork.

Luo Qing was born in Nanching, in the Jianxi Province of China. After receiving his Master’s of Art in Oil Painting at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, he taught art at the Academy of Chinese Traditional Operas for six years. He has participated exhibitions around the world, including Singapore, Indonesia, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium and his home country, China. However, “No One Gets Out Alive” is Luo Qing’s first solo show in the United States. He has received two prizes from the Central Academy of Fine Arts and International Art Palace, respectively. His work has been exhibited at the Shanghai Art Museum and twice at the National Art Museum of China. Luo Qing currently lives and works in Beijing.
