STPI at Art Basel
by STPI
Location: Booth Q2, Messe Basel, Messeplatz, Basel , Switzerland
Artist(s): Rirkrit TIRAVANIJA, Heman CHONG
Date: 19 Jun - 22 Jun 2014

STPI will be flying the Singapore flag high at this prestigious fair, alongside 300 top galleries from around the world. Highlights at STPI’s booth are Rirkrit Tiravanija’s new works and Heman Chong’s book covers which respond to Tiravanija’s works.

Inspired by H.G. Wells’ dystopian novel “Time Machine”, Tiravanija’s new works are based on multiple but synchronized perspectives on the history of time. In shiny silver prints, chromed and 3D sculptures and in thermo-chromatic ink, the works are accompanied with scholarly titles which bring us to revisit Charles Darwin’s seminal Tree of Life theory as well as the universally known Fibonacci number sequence which deciphers the mathematical pattern of nature. “Fifth chapter: perverse polar engineering, traveling blind to quartz city in the river of chrome (Bikini bottom, mercury seas)” speaks of a time-travel portal to Bikini Bottom in an episode of “Spongebob Squarepants”, a sub-marine city where all things are possible and the future is entirely ‘chromed.’

Meanwhile, Heman Chong, Singapore’s leading conceptual artist of his generation, whose current exhibition Moderation(s) at the Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art in Rotterdam, makes a special deliberation of life referencing literary works themed on time and travel, such as H. G Well’s “The Time Machine”, Audrey Niffeneger’s “The Time Traveller’s Wife” and Isaac Asimov’s “The End of Eternity”. Painted in the styles of Western art history canon - minimalism, abstract expressionism, conceptualism, fauvism and color fields - these paintings are a continuation of Chong’s highly sought after Cover (Versions) series that began in 2009, reconciling his research driven practice with painterly brush.

Adding to STPI’s conceptually charged booth, are works by Berlin/Seoul based artist Haegue Yang and editions by UK Turner Prize winner, Richard Deacon. Yang's "Non-Folding" series are austere black-on-white spray painted constellations, tracing movement and time of origami pieces dancing across paper. Deacon’s benefit editions under €500 are highly accessible art pieces by one of the towering figures in contemporary sculpture.
