Of Masters and Heroes
by Utterly Art
Location: Utterly Art
Artist(s): GROUP SHOW
Date: 31 Jul - 10 Aug 2014

Utterly Art presents this momentous exhibition, which travelled to New Delhi last year, of paintings by selected modern masters and distinguished artists of South India (most of whom are winners of the Indian National Award).

One cannot deny that subjectivity is as synonymous as creativity is to the understanding of art and art-makers. And this is what makes the art by the eight dynamic artists of this intriguing exhibition a treat from every possible perspective. The modern masters in this exhibition are C. Dakshinamoorthy, Pon Ragunathan, A. Selvaraj, S.K. Rajavelu and G. Raman, while A. Viswam, N. Manoharan, and P. Gnana form an exceptional trio of 'heroes' from the extensive, debatable chronology of Post-Independence and Post-Modernism in Indian art; who are indeed leading artists from what is popularly referred to as the genre of contemporary art. At this juncture, it will not be justifiable if one does not present a worthy mention of Gnana's well-deserved status as one of Singapore's celebrated artists, whose aesthetic affair with the cow-imagery has become an international phenomenon. Nevertheless, Viswam's pulsating, vivacious abstracts and Manoharan's poignant portrayal of the curious goat, stand true to nothing less than magnificence at its core. The collection of art in this exhibition features a symbiosis between masterly renditions of technical skill within the framework of religio-mythological iconography, and a strong sense of freedom in the re-contextualisation of traditional modes into a modern grammar, that speaks to the viewer in the international arena. Do relish the collection, without reservations, while acknowledging the introspective, aesthetic experience that it presents you with as a collective entity as well.
