The Cosmos and The Sea
by Galerie Quynh
Location: Galerie Quynh
Artist(s): Christine NGUYEN
Date: 4 Dec 2014 - 10 Jan 2015

Galerie Quynh is pleased to present “The Cosmos and The Sea” – a solo exhibition by Los Angeles-based artist Christine Nguyen. A noted artist known for works that draw upon the imageries of science and nature, Christine Nguyen will present a collection of new and recent photobased work ranging from intimate c-prints to ambitious mural-size work.

Combining drawing with photographic techniques, Christine Nguyen has developed a pioneering practice centered on the manipulation and layering of negatives. Her work revolves around the imaginings of an organic prism, a dream-like world where oceans merge with outer space. Her works depict ferocious ocean currents, meandering creatures, iridescent flora, spiny strata of rocks and other fantastical imagery, each performing a distinctive act in the collective formulation of a mysterious ecosphere. As our vision fluctuates between the micro- and macroscopic, shifting between the primordial organisms dwelling at the bottom of the sea and the gossamer beings floating in the midst of the universe, the complex multilayered works speak volumes about our infinitesimal juxtapositions vis-à-vis the natural world.

Nguyen relentlessly explores the frontier of her materials. Through the development of a personal cosmology where “commonalities among species, forms, and environments become visible and expressive,” she creates works that defy the conventional conceptions of time and space. The quintessential concoction of a mystical bionetwork beyond earthly limits is a suggestion of both past narratives and future possibilities. The phantasmagorical sensations brought about by her works are sprinkles of stardust into the imaginary world inside our head, a soothing call for the resurgence of our quiet inner child.
