Gallery EXIT is pleased to present From where to where?, an exhibition of new works by Elise Lai, on view 30 September - 30 October, 2010. Her debut exhibition at the gallery will feature paintings that explore how intimacy and distance merges in everyday life. Intimacy is initiated through an act of touch to acquire a relationship with things and people around. Following Lai's documentation of breakfast gatherings that she hosts, she is currently exploring how a foreign place becomes a site of intimate contact. Scenes from her travel are imbued with a sentimental touch by her choice of pale colors. A hotel room, an airport, an airplane, a view from the window seat, takes on personal significance as they become her most intimate lodging, although only temporarily.
Born in 1987, Elise Lai is currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Lai is interested in probing the fragility of intimacy that we encounter in our everyday life.
Opening reception: Thursday, 30 September, 6 - 8 pm
The artist will be present at the opening reception.
