Artist(s): KWAN Sheung Chi, WONG Wai Yin
Date: 18 Oct - 16 Nov 2013

Kwan Sheung Chi and Wong Wai Yin regularly collaborate on their artistic projects, the first being EVERYTHING GOES WRONG FOR THE POOR COUPLE, a 34 hour-long performance over the course of 5 days at ART HK 2010; and had gone on to present TO DEFIND THE CORE VALUES IS THE CORE OF THE CORE VALUES, a performative and audience participatory project, in Mobile M+: Yau Ma Tei organised by the West Kowloon Cultural District.

Kwan Sheung Chi was born in Hong Kong in 1980. He graduated in 2003 with a BA in Fine Arts from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is also a founding member of local art groups Hong Kong Arts Discovery Channel (HKADC), hkPARTg (the Political Art Group) and Woofer Ten. Kwan was awarded the Starr Foundation Fellowship by the Asian Cultural Council in 2009 to participate in an international residency programme in New York City, USA. He is the recipient of The Award for Young Artists 2011, Hong Kong Arts Development Council; and a finalist of HUGO BOSS ASIA ART Award for Emerging Chinese Artists 2013.

Many of Kwan's work take the form of self-training without seemingly advancing. This on-going wrestle with the duality of success and failure, achievement and defeat, calculation and chance, underlies much of his recent practice and even his daily life. Through his work, we are invited to be witnesses of a life and to come up with exit strategies from our dualistic mind-set.

Wong Wai Yin graduated from The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2004 and completed her MFA at University of Leeds (UK) in 2005. She is one of the founders of the Observation Society, Guangzhou, China. Wong took part in an international residency programme in New York City, USA awarded by Asia Cultural Council and Hong Kong Arts Development Council; and was invited in 2011 to be artist-in-residence at Asia Art Archive, Hong Kong. She has exhibited her works extensively in Hong Kong as well as Japan, USA, Singapore and The Netherlands.

Wong Wai Yin's practice is a persistent enquiry into what constitutes as art. Looking at the struggle between reality and imitation, her ambiguous pairings of everyday objects are appropriated as repositories of hidden, multi-layered meanings.
